PHILADELPHIA — Growing up near Philadelphia, Joey Wendle dreamed of coming to the plate and hitting a game-winning home run for the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. On Sunday, he beat his hometown team, hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning to lift the A’s to a 6-3 win over the Phillies. “I’ve done that plenty of times in backyards, so it was certainly really fun today,” Wendle said. He was one of three rookies to hit a home run for Oakland. With the A’s trailing 3-2 with two outs in the sixth, Wendle lined the first pitch he saw from reliever Edubray Ramos into the right-field seats, quieting the crowd of 28,054.

To celebrate the A’s actual 50th birthday at the Coliseum next year, the team is giving the fans an unprecedented present: The April 17 game will be free. “We want to celebrate the 50th anniversary and our fan base and the community,” A’s chief operating officer Chris Giles said. “We’d like to give a gift to the community.” Major League Baseball told the A’s that this will be the first known instance of a team providing free admission to all fans. Season-ticket holders will have priority and are guaranteed access. Online registration for the remaining tickets will begin in January. There is one other group that will be especially welcome.

PHILADELPHIA — Old-school Daniel Mengden pitched like an old-time ace. Mengden was dominant in a two-hitter, Matt Olson and Matt Joyce each hit two-run homers and the A’s beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 on Friday night. “It felt great,” Mengden said. “We dream about doing it since we’re little and coming all the way up and doing it is a great feeling.” Mengden (1-1) struck out seven and walked none to record his first career shutout in his 18th start. J.P Crawford had both hits off Mengden. Using a herky-jerky delivery and wearing a handlebar mustache, Mengden kept the Phillies off-balance with a heavy dose of offspeed pitches and low-90s fastballs.

BOSTON — Drew Pomeranz, facing his former team, knew it was likely the last batter he’d face. He figured he had to make one of his best pitches. Pomeranz threw six innings of one-run ball, finishing by striking out Matt Olson with the bases loaded to lead the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox past the A’s 6-2 on Thursday. With two outs, a full count and the game tied 1-1, Pomeranz got Olson swinging on a high, 92 mph fastball. “In that big situation, making a big pitch is a huge deal when you can wiggle your way out of a jam,” Pomeranz said. “He wasn’t chasing the curveball. I got 3-2 on him and I gave all that I have left to make one good pitch and he swung.

BOSTON — Doug Fister’s rough start was too much for the Red Sox to overcome this time. Matt Olson hit a two-run homer, Jed Lowrie drove in two runs and the A’s rebounded for a 7-3 victory over the AL East leaders to win for the sixth time in seven games Wednesday night. Jharel Cotton (8-10) picked up the win, allowing three runs in five innings. “You look at the box score and it doesn’t tell you how he battled and had to make some big pitches with the lead,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. The loss trimmed Boston’s cushion in the division to three games over the Yankees, who beat Tampa Bay 3-2.
